Choose a Text: The texts I think I want to focus on with this project is Lisa Delpit's "Other People's Children" and "Colorblindness is the New Racism". I really enjoyed the perspective that Delpit provided, for most of my life - especially in college, when I have taken courses that discuss these matters, they of course encourage diversity and open-mindedness to other cultures, but I really thought Delpit hit the nail on the head with that we can do that while also helping those of other cultures be able to function within American culture (while staying true to their own) and that is truly providing useful education. "Reconstructing Privilege also stuck with me because I never really thought that being "colorblind" could be racist, so I liked that this was a new concept to me.
Who will I share with: One of my favorite people to discuss with is my grandfather-in-law. He was a high school educator for over 40 years and at 83 he is still so passionate about education he still attends monthly school committee meetings in our community to advocate for students and for those who don't fit the mold of white, middle class, on the direct path to college. He is one of my favorite people to discuss and debate with, and I know he will really enjoy this conversation, will be interested in these topics and learning more as well as likely provide some really interesting insight.
Format: It will be an individual interview (but also it is going to be us having coffee at our favorite coffee shop on a Sunday morning where we have our most interesting conversations!
